Those of you that have Catskill boots, are they REALLY worth the $$ that you get charged for them? I mean I most likely will continue to do festival in some way for the near future and I would love to have good boots/shoes for out there.

You know I'm really fond of the NBC olympic web site video section. I've been able to go back and watch all sorts of stuff I missed the first time. They have pretty much the complete men's team voleyball final for your viewing pleasure among many other things.

The one annoying thing is the commercials. You have to watch a commercial before you view content - which I can deal with because it is only twenty seconds. But after about ten minutes, you have to watch another commercial. The problem I have with all of this is the fact it is the same commercial. You think I'm going to be more or less likely to watch Tropic Thunder after I've seen the same twenty seconds five times?

OK, bad example given I've already seen it and it is funny as hell. I still don't need to see the same commercial five or six times during a 60 minute volleyball match.

But still, I can watch the men's Volleyball final. Sure, the resolution makes it hard to see the ball at times but I can manage.

Speaking of movies, I watched The House on Haunted Hill last night as a possible Omegacon movie. Filled with Vincent Price-y goodness to be sure but I fear the dumbass factor (don't do that you dumbass!!!!) is pretty high. It IS short, though, and I like the idea of a late night double feature with a couple of older haunted house movies. Might be worth it to look at pairing it up with The Haunting or The Haunting of Hell House....

Going to the fair today with ma Dreggie peeps! I will have Soba noodles because having tasted them twice, I declare them awesome. You must all go to the fair and eat them as they are very cheap and very yummy. They are in the international bazaar. Better known as "the place with the stage that should have The Dregs on it."

I had cheese on a stick when we went on Teusday so that fair food is checked off my list. I was sad, though, because they didn't have swiss cheese any longer. Only American. I'll grant that the "swiss" was really just American without the orange color but it is simply not right.

I've still not had mini doughnuts so that is something I need to do tonight. Also need to have some cheese curds. My yearly cream puff is also not yet in my belly.

I'm really hoping to try something new on each visit to the fair this year. I don't know what that'll be today (the soba noodles don't count because I have sampled them) but let me just say Yay State Fair!!!

I don't know, freedom of speech means you can openly say what you want, but some people seem to think it also guarantees them a right to an audience.

And there's already been a possible plot to pick off Obama?

I had a really good practice tonight. Nothing specific, I was just skating pretty strong, getting around the other refs pretty well, and calling things with a measure of confidence. A couple of the other vets noted that I was doing well as well.

That is all.

Rome was in many ways the highlight of our trip, much to my surprise.  Although Scandanavia was cleaner, more pedestrian and bicycle friendly, safer, cooler, less smoky and more orderly, Rome, the eternal city, had the most amazing sights.

Unfortunately, all of the sights are much too large and impressive to do justice to with mere photos.

Just in case anyone wants to know, Here is the outcome of last Friday's court date such as I understand it )

In other news of the weird, last night was the first post me directors meeting which sucked rather a lot. Lots of reasons why it sucked but the main one is simply the fact that win or lose, I'm not in the game any longer. That and I really am not going to see a lot of my friends any more.

Totally my choice.

Totally the right choice.

But right now, it isn't a lot of fun.

On the other hand, it looks like the Dregs could have as many as five shows scheduled in October. Many of them will be as an opening act for bands with whom we have nothing in common. We'll be calling for lot of folks to come out and cheer us on given the crowd that is there for the headliners will probably look on us with mistrust and fear.

Aug. 26th, 2008 @ 08:07 am still tired from the weekend
Current Mood: good
It's official. I may be functional, but I am still an easily-tired wuss.

Had a damn fine time this weekend, though I didn't catch as many of my friends' shows as I meant to. Much work, much sun, much chaos, much fun.

Managed to swing by the hospital Friday night on the way out to fest and see [info]sybildiscontent and the lovely new Kieran. Our timing was a little off as we hit during the little guy's "dinner rush." Stayed briefly so as not to distract from the breasts at hand... I mean, moobs. I mean, at the time that whole eating thing was still a project. Hopefully the process has become easier at this point and the moobs have doubled in size again with the good stuff. Little guy's pretty hungry and has the best spot in town. Just sayin'. Much love to the proud parents who are pretty damn adorable and all.

Friday night at fest was awesome and full of silliness. This included me actually drinking, many good friends, and a drunken run to the gas station. Ry sober cabbed there and back, fat ankles and all. Even the gas station guy got in on it, saying over the loud speakers that there was "an attitude at the front register." I blame Becky. ;-)

Spent most of the festival weekend working on the stocks, showing the folks a few ways to start pulling people onto the stage with some regularity. Had a great time and am very excited to watch how this show grows over the season.

From what I understand, I am very very glad I was there to work and skipped cast call where I would have been forced to listen to even more crap about how put upon management is. Amazes me how they can fire people without prior notice and then think they're the ones who have it rough. Hello professionalism! *jazz hands*

Looks as though the direction of the place continues to be filled with ruthless expendability and lectures on how you should take it and like it. What a crock of crap.

That said, my lovely friends are still lovely, there are some great shows happening and much love and luck to you all!

As for me, I personally learned that even if the place were run by competence, I could not possibly make it seven weekends with a full time job yet. I may have finally gotten some stamina back, but I do not have that much in me right about now. And by Sunday, I was beyond pathetic. And I only worked a half shift that day! I feel for the rest of the cast who does that crap melting away in the sun everyday. Y'all are badasses.

Back at work, which is filled with it's own sorts of silliness. Plus, Pa K gets out of the hospital today which will be a great relief to his boredom.

Wonder what September will be like. August was totally killer.

Fest Recap

And thus ends week 2. I played the hell out of the weekend, grinning through the sunburn, the dust, the blisters, and the ankle, and am already jonesing for more. Can it possibly get any better?

Well, maybe. This is Labor Day Weekend, coming up, and if I'm marking my calendar correctly, it's the 3rd Annual Eat Homemade Cheesecake Around Mark's Campfire on Friday Night weekend. I'm thinking one Pumpkin and one Lemon, because I love the hell out of lemon-flavored cheesecake.

A few memories from the weekend that'll mean nothing to anyone else but they mean something to me so shut up.

Best patron whine: "They're drinking my MEAD!!!!"

It was really funny. You should've been there.

Best opening gate show moment: When D'Lis said "why don't you take a chance...." and I said "TAKE A CHANCE??? We know that one!!!"

Again. Really funny. You would have laughed if you'd been there.

Well two weekends down. It is remarkable how the festival season seems to go on forever and at the same time seems to pass in the blink of an eye.

The weather this weekend was amazing mid-september style temperatures. If we'd gotten even thirty minutes of rain overnight, it would have been perfect. With the dry conditions and a consistent breeze, the dust was pretty thick. Makes it hell on someone who is - I don't know - singing all day.

I found myself on the street a lot this weekend in between shows. I spent a very enjoyable 30 minutes with [info]fitzthetoad on Sunday quizing a mother and daughter on stuff that they should have known. Mom shouldn't have been so embarassed that her daughter didn't know the names of the first three Presidents of the United States given that she couldn't even name the current Senators from the State of MN. She got Norm Coleman but wasn't able to come up with the name of "the other guy" (that is exactly what the said).

Seriously, the girl was wearing a Beatles T-shirt and couldn't even name the members of the band. It later came out that she was more of a fan of Pink Floyd. By the time I had to leave to do our Dregs show, we'd gathered quite the crowd. Amazing how funny people think it is when other people are stupid.

What was really sad was the fact we were trying to ask them easy questions so they would get them right.

I also played pickle ball with George and Linda Saturday afternoon and actually came up with what could be a very entertaining street bit to try if I ever actually had the time to spend on the street trying it out. Maybe I've figured out what I'll be doing if the Dregs ever move on...

The Dregs are now becoming more in demand on our morning walkies. We had one shop actually send a messenger to say they were disappointed we weren't singing to them in the morning.

I swear, by the final weekend, we'll be singing for every damn shop at the show. If they start giving us free stuff, it'll all be worth it.

On Sunday, Tony Miller tagged in at Vilification tennis and delivered an insult that will forever be burned on to my brain. It crossed the line so completely, I had no choice but to end the show. It was also funny as hell.

Tony was the only person who could have said it. If one of us had, it would have "proven" everything that upper management thinks about how out of control our show it. He isn't a regular member of the show and he is specifically hired to be crass and crude. I could claim I had no idea what he was going to say (I really had no idea what he was going to say) and the situation is diffused.

Not that I want it to happen again.

Although it'd be very funny if Gary Parker ever got on stage and did the same thing....

I also made fun of the fact that Joe Kudla died. On stage. I think it was pretty funny.

And I think that when someone who made a living as a comedian dies, it would be completely wrong to think it is inappropriate to make a joke about. Damn it, the guy was a comedian, if you can't joke about the fact he died, it is almost disrepectful.

So, you know, it was a pretty good weekend. I guess I'll go back.

I didn't think it was possible to top last weekend, but somehow this weekend was even more awesome.

I have a newfound love of street, and for the first time, being out there for more than twenty minutes isn't killing my back. I can play and play and play and still have enough energy at the end of the day on Sunday to tango with a mime.

For entering the season with such a piss poor attitude, so far it's been the best ever. I already can't wait for next weekend to hit the streets again.

Aug. 25th, 2008 @ 07:53 am Another decent weekend & Tafl
According to our records the weather was good on second weekend last year also, but this year our sales were up a almost a couple hundred bucks. Probably would have been a lot closer if Chris hadn't sold a $100 Hnefatafl set

Speaking of Hnefatafl, there was something about a world Hnefatafl championship being held in the Shetland Islands so I contacted the organizers and asked for a copy of the official rules. The person I contacted said they would send them after he gets back from holiday and that they are using an 11x11 board.
